Next steps and open questions (updated 2026-10-17, evening)

  • ✔ Pirro’s original birth act (Lucca 1901 n. 388): born in the hospital/maternity ward, named by the hospital.
  • ✔ Marriage act (Vecchiano 1920 n. 89) and both sets of banns.
  • ✔ Maria Braccioli’s birth: 27 Jan 1889, Avane no. 90 (Vecchiano 1889 n. 26).
  • ✔ Twins Giovanni & Francesco, b. 22 Dec 1923, died 23/24 Dec 1923 at Avane no. 12.
  • ✔ Maria & Teresa’s voyage: SS Mendoza, Genoa → Santos, arrived 22 Aug 1930.
  • ✔ Teresa’s marriage to Miguel Justino, Penha (São Paulo), 4 Aug 1938.
  • ✔ Pirro’s (1966) and Maria’s (1968) São Paulo death records.
  1. ★ TOP PRIORITY: ASLu register 4318 “Occulte dal 1879 al 1909” (SAN ID 1415346, series “Madri occulte e nutrici”): a register of women who gave birth confidentially, with personal details and birth outcome. The entry for 11 Mar 1901 is the most likely place to find Pirro’s mother’s name. Cross-reference with brefotrofio register 4326 (matricola, wet nurse/foster family). See ../01_italy_lucca/archivio_stato_lucca/inventory_1623/KEY_UNITS_occulte_4318_and_brefotrofio_4326.md.
  2. Pirro’s mother / admission record (ASLu, Regi Spedali fonds). Send the follow-up email (../05_correspondence/2026-10_DRAFT_followup_email_ASLu_italiano.md) asking for the Sala di Maternità register, March 1901, brefotrofio register 4326, and baliatico (wet-nurse/foster) registers.
  3. Who raised him (foster family, 1901–1920): probably in or near Gello (San Giuliano Terme).
    • ASLu baliatico/tenutari registers (same email).
    • Comune di San Giuliano Terme, archivio storico / anagrafe: registro di popolazione 1901–1921 and the 1911 census household sheets for Gello. A Lucca esposto would be listed inside his foster family’s household. Email: protocollo@pec.comune.sangiulianoterme.pisa.it (check current address).
    • Parish of Gello (San Giuliano Terme, Archdiocese of Pisa): stati d’anime (household censuses kept by the priest) often list foster children. Ask the Archivio Storico Diocesano di Pisa.
    • Military draft, class of 1901: lista di leva of the comune where he lived at 18 (Bagni S. Giuliano → Archivio di Stato di Pisa, Ufficio di leva) and ruolo matricolare (Distretto Militare di Pisa/Lucca). These list his residence and guardian and sometimes emigration.
  4. Pirro’s emigration (1924–1930):
    • His 1940 São Paulo foreigner registration card (APESP Delegacia de Estrangeiros; indexed as “Pirro Gagliardo”, cert. 262920, reg. 68955). The FamilySearch image (Cartões de Imigração, folder “Gagliardo-Gahwiler”, image 9) is restricted: view it at a FamilySearch Center/affiliate library, or order a Certidão de Registro de Estrangeiro from APESP (about R$ 65; needs an APESP login + DARE payment, so the family must order it). It should give the ship and arrival date and his 1940 address.
    • Same for Maria’s card (cert. 630721, folder “Gaete-Gagliardo”, image 701).
    • Italian side: passport register (registro dei passaporti) of the Questura/Prefettura di Pisa, 1924–1930, at the Archivio di Stato di Pisa.
  5. Restricted FamilySearch images (FamilySearch Center/affiliate only): Teresa’s 1921 birth, the twins’ 1923 births, Teresa’s 1996 death, Miguel Justino’s 1970 death (6YGS-2ZP5), Maria’s second 1968 death entry.
  • Who were Reinou (Reynaldo?) Justino, João Oronzo Justino and Gilberto Justino? Probably Teresa & Miguel’s children.
  • What does “VICENCHIARO / AVILA” (blue pen on the passport) mean?
  • Any photos, Pirro’s carteira de estrangeiro, work papers (carteira profissional), naturalisation attempt?
  • Teresa’s mother-in-law: Maria Peragine Justino (b. 1893 Italy, d. 9 Oct 1954 Penha), FS 6YGS? (index only).
  • Cemeteries: Pirro, Cemitério de São Miguel Paulista (Sep 1966). Maria, Cemitério da Saudade (Nov 1968). The SP Serviço Funerário can confirm the grave/ossuary.
  • Maria’s birth year: 1889 (birth act). 1891 on the passport and Brazilian documents is wrong.
  • Teresa’s birth date: 14 Jul 1921 (Italian). Brazilian documents say 21 Jul.
  • Pirro’s death record says “natural de Roma” (wrong) and spells the surname “Gagliarde”. The 1940 index has “Gagliardo”.
  • The FamilySearch index mis-reads “Ignoto” as “Ignazio” and has “Borfaccioli”/“Filandiere” on the San Giuliano banns.
