In English
Section titled “In English”- Born: 11 March 1901, 1:00 a.m. (“alle ore ___ meridiane una”; the clerk used the 24-hour clock, writing the registration time as “tredici” = 13:20, so “una” = 01:00), at Via Galli Tassi no. 27, Lucca — the address of the city hospital (Spedale, today Palazzo Galli Tassi), which had a maternity ward (Sala di Maternità) attached.
- Parents: “genitori ignoti” — unknown.
- Registered: 14 March 1901 by Carlo Celli (son of the late Luigi, 37, clerk), acting as the official delegated by the Superior of the Hospital. The baby was not shown to the registrar “for reasons of health” (standard wording).
- Name given by the declarant (i.e. by the hospital): Pirro, surname Gagliardi. Both were assigned — Gagliardi is not a family surname.
- Witnesses: Giuseppe Rocchi (36, clerk), Mario Mariani (25, clerk) — almost certainly hospital/commune staff.
- Later annotation: married Maria Braccioli in Vecchiano on 5 December 1920 (Vecchiano marriage register 1920, act n. 8[?]).
Why this matters
Section titled “Why this matters”- He was most likely born inside the hospital, not left in the foundling wheel. The act records a birth at Via Galli Tassi 27, reported by the hospital’s delegated official, with the explicit mention of the Maternity Ward. This is the usual formula for a baby born to a woman admitted to the maternity ward who chose not to be named (“parto segreto”/“partoriente segreta”).
- His mother was therefore probably a patient of the Sala di Maternità on 11 March 1901. Maternity wards kept their own admission registers (registro delle partorienti / ricoverate in Maternità), separate from the foundling register 4326. These registers often record the mother’s real name, age, parish/village and occupation even when the civil act says “genitori ignoti”. → Ask ASLu specifically for the Maternità admission register covering March 1901 in the Regi Spedali fonds, alongside unit 4326.
- The same declarant formula appears for other babies in this register (e.g. acts 353 and 389 nearby carry unusual, invented-looking names), which helps identify the hospital’s foundling births in March 1901.
